I went to prep school (The McCallie School in Chattanooga) on Missionary Ridge. There is a Civil War Memorial at the crest of the ridge above the school. Literally 50 years ago while I was a student there, a history class from school scanned a small patch of the ridge with a metal detector and found absolutely N0 Civil War artifacts. Hardly a comprehensive search, but the general consensus was that the battlefield had been picked clean several decades prior.

With my dad’s death in 2015 found out that he had a half brother, my uncle who die as USMC May 31st, 1968 arrived in Vietnam October 1967. Now I know someone. I’m here to find out what happened in Quang Tri on May 31st, 1968.

Our family physician was a Navy surgeon on a ship at Tarawa. He was particularly critical of the Marine Corps practice of serving steak and eggs just before the landing. He said it made a greasy mess when trying to patch up the wounded. He went three days without sleep, so I guess had a right to complain.

In case the truth gets lost in all the sentimental patriotism....this is the reality. Not one of those guys had a legitimate right or reason to be in Vietnam. A lot of the POWs were pilots. They dropped all kinds of ordinance everywhere...both North and South Vietnam. There were huge innocent casualties and destruction of infrastructure. The Vietnamese considered them "war criminals". Considering they didn't belong there and there was no declaration of war I consider that an accusation worthy of an international court of law. No one is saying the enemy were good guys....but those POWs weren't guys in the White Hats either. They were lucky the enemy didn't eliminate them instead of incarcerating them.
